Explorations - Hedgerows

Location: Minto House Car Park, Edinburgh, Scotland & Falkland Estate, Scotland
Duration: Yr 3 Semester 1
Project type: Theoratical design for an Urban Marshland
Medium: Handrawing, digital, handmade models

The project unfolds as a meticulous exploration of how the elements of a hedgerow can be translated into urban structures that mimic the hedgerow’s ability to create a rich variety of spatial experiences, accommodate biodiversity, and regulate water. The guiding themes from the hedgerow allowed us to research the history of the urban landscape of Edinburgh with the same rigour. This led us to embrace the historical waterways and lochs of the city as a powerful catalyst for enhancing urban water resilience. The narrative unfolds as an exploration of architectural interventions and ecological revitalization through wetland integration. This allows the metamorphosis of the city’s water management strategies, and a higher level of symbiosis between the urban and the natural.
